Ben Thompson, a security officer at Topher Limited, completed his first ever Yeovil Half Marathon in April. Topher Limited congratulates Ben for his achievement and encourages all its staff to be a part of community for a good cause.
Ben shares his experience as below:
“As a security guard at Topher Limited I have always had a strong passion for health and physical fitness. I have been lifting weights ever since I was 17 years old and like to think I’m always up for a challenge. Now at the age of 34, with the encouragement of my girlfriend Lorna Blake who was also running her first half marathon and also with the encouragement of Lisa Reason and Jane Carter of Tonezone Fitness centre in Yeovil, I decided to sign up for the Yeovil Half Marathon to represent the ToneZone Fitness Centre alongside them.
Prior to this I regularly ran 10K quite comfortably once per month, but I had never considered anything above that distance so I definitely had my work cut out for me as this would be my first time ever attempting a half marathon at 13.1 miles. In preparation I ran 1 – 2 times per week and also continued my weight lifting routine alongside it 4-5 times per week. As time drew nearer I became increasingly nervous as a first timer and had no idea what to expect. Needless to say I wasn’t sleeping too well on those last couple of nights. When the day finally arrived I was absolutely amazed at the sheer volume of people who had turned out to compete in the event. There were well over 1600 entries and hundreds more turned up to line the streets of Yeovil and show their support. I was really taken back by the overwhelming sense of community spirit and couldn’t believe so many people had come out early to cheer us on.
It truly was an incredible experience and I loved every second of it. When all was said and done I crossed the finish line in 01:44:58 with a chip time of 01:44:29 in position 351 out of 1619. Much faster than I had planned which was a huge achievement for me. Overall it was a fantastic event which I would recommend to anyone looking for a personal challenge. I never thought I’d have it in me to run a half marathon but on the day I dug deep and really surprised myself. I will definitely be trying to beat my time next year…. “
